What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing psychedelics, such as medicinal mushrooms or LSD, is a growing trend among those looking to boost their creativity, get ahead in the workplace, or simply experience and enjoy life more fully.

Microdosing involves taking sub-perceptual amounts of a psychedelic substance. There’s no true consensus on how much this is, but people typically report taking a twentieth to a tenth of a full dose. By taking such a small amount, you’re able to live normally and go about daily activities while experiencing a subtle increase in creativity, focus, and awareness.

What is the purpose of microdosing?

Microdosing is a way to integrate psychedelics into your life and experience many of their benefits, without experiencing the intense effects of macrodosing that often turn people away from psychedelic use.

An abundance of research exists on the many mental and emotional benefits of psychedelics at higher doses, but like all potent substances, they come with risks and side effects. When done correctly, microdosing poses no risk of a “bad trip,” nor does it cause the visual or auditory hallucinations, time distortion, or ego dissolution associated with higher doses – you’re able to remain fully coherent and aware the entire time.

Additionally, microdosing does not require you to set time aside away from work and family obligations to experience the effects of a trip. Microdosing allows you to function normally – you can go to work, interact with friends and family, or enjoy time on your own without feeling overwhelmed by the medicine’s effects.

What are the effects of microdosing?

Since virtually no research on microdosing has been published, we have to rely on anecdotal evidence and reports from people who have tried microdosing themselves. However, an abundance of scientific knowledge does exist on the effects of taking larger doses of psychedelics, which allows us to extrapolate some of the effects of microdosing.

Some of the potential benefits of microdosing include:

  • Heightened sensory perception
  • Less social anxiety
  • Greater appreciation for nature and surroundings
  • Fewer negative or ruminating thoughts

Because of these potential benefits, many people have found success using microdosing to treat mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Others report that microdosing can help curb addictive tendencies toward alcohol, tobacco, or other substances. No studies have been conducted to confirm these results, but anecdotal evidence indicates that it could become a promising new treatment option for those suffering from treatment-resistant conditions.
